The Who – The Kids Are Alright

Nos volvemos clásicos. Nos damos vuelta y miramos un poco hacia atrás, echamos un vistazo al pasado (de esos que está bueno hacerlos) y recordamos apenas una pizca del espíritu y la vibra que comenzaban a dar nacimiento a una nueva forma de pensar, una manera distinta de entender la existencia de cada uno y en definitiva, a la más linda de las irreverencias, el rock.

The Who es gigante e intentar hacerle sombra es de iluso y necio. Es increíble repasar un poco su historia y ver que entre 1969 y 1973 editó Tommy, Who’s Next y Quadrophenia, tres grandes bestias del rock y que probablemente enseñaron y alimentaron más cerebros y corazones que muchos libros, pensadores, escuelas y padres.

Y todo fue obra de Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle y Keith Moon, cuatro hombres que estuvieron estallando tímpanos durante un buen rato con grandiosos temas como We Won’t Get Fooled Again, Baba O’Riley, Sparks, The Acid Queen, Love Reign O’er Me y The Song Is Over, entre una infinidad de inigualables canciones. Cuando digo inigualables me refiero sencillamente a eso. Ninguna interpretación será todo lo que es su versión original. Nada será más que un pequeño intento de imitar la fuerza de un inmenso elefante corriendo.

Cada uno de los miembros de The Who es verdaderamente indispensable. No quiero ni imaginar las veces que habremos escuchado esto sobre distintas bandas, pero creo que el caso de estos cuatro ingleses, sin ninguna duda, vale la afirmación. Un Keith Moon que hacía de su batería un desquiciado y veloz tanque de guerra. Los dedos más rápidos del mundo que creaban las líneas de bajo más difíciles de seguir (hasta para la vista) pertenecieron a John Entwistle. Mientras, a pecho descubierto y lana al viento, Daltrey hacía de cada canción su última, algo de lo que la vena de su cuello da fe. Por último, un overol envolvía a Pete Townshend, una mente brillante que creaba con su guitarra la más excelsa combinación de violencia y belleza. Escuchar y ver, ambas tienen que estar para interpretar a The Who.

The Kids Are Alright llega esta semana. Se trata de una fantástica versión en el Royal Albert Hall de Londres, en el año 2003. Mucho tiempo atrás, Moon había fallecido a los 32 años y en esta oportunidad se encuentra Zak Starkey, hijo de Ringo Starr, al mando de la batería. Algunos impecables agregados vamos a encontrar en relación con la versión de estudio de este single que fue parte de su primer álbum, The Who Sings My Generation, en 1965.

Ahora sí, The Kids Are Alright de The Who.
